Fumble in the Jungle

Posted by on Dec 22, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

After much coaxing, I have finally agreed to write a blog post, and thus resume our website blogging. So, the idea is to write on events we conduct and attend, and the corresponding activities we indulge in. I hope this will be the first of many.

So, recently I attended a much publicised open general quiz called ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, organised by IIM Kashipur. No, it did not take place in Jim Corbett National Park. The quiz was conducted by JK, a well-known quizzIMG_4753er and quizmaster from Hyderabad. Major Chandrakant Nair, another well-known quizzer and quizmaster, was a contributor. Except for the two buzzer rounds, I found the quiz pretty balanced and well-researched. But then, I am complaining probably because I faltered at the buzzers (as always). I did not buzz, for the millionth time probably, on a last question- nothing to lose scenario, right? The last question, cost us our second place. It basically asked the code word for ‘I’ in the NATO phonetic alphabet. And, here comes a very useful advice for all budding quizzers, if you think you are slow on the buzzers, you have to learn the art of pre-empting a QM or rather a question. But, if it was up to me I would have put a ban on all buzzer rounds. Anyhow, my teammate Apratim Mukhopadhyay and I, emerged the second runners-up quite comfortably.

IMG_20151220_101648421_HDRAs I said, the jungle in the quiz name did not refer to India’s first national park. So, I gathered a few friends, who agreed to accompany me for a weekend trip to Jim Corbett National Park. We stayed in the fantastic Treetop Riverview Sterling Resort. There I stumbled upon a much-missed TV show, CID. The highlight of that particular episode has to be Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo. Most things in the show have not changed; for instance the-once-bald Dr. Salunke still grows a strand of hair every time someone commits a crime in India. And the women in the squad keeps changing every time I watch the show. I suppose they get married, or give up their non-existing careers at CID for other much better jobs. Sorry for rambling, but the smaller and inconsequential things in life intrigue me the most. No wonder I am such a huge fan of Seinfeld.

Overall, I had a good time. Earned some money (most of which was spent on that trip), saw a few wild animals, cracked a few Ek Tha Tiger jokes (in absence of a real tiger), and came back to Delhi with a lot of confidence, the one where I thought I can take the Delhi ‘heat’ coming from a much colder Nainital. Except, I was utterly wrong. As I type, I am buried in three layers of wool, as I finish writing this.

Till next time, happy winter and a very merry Christmas!

The SINMQ Jamboree 2015

Posted by on Oct 5, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Quick! Name three things you know about Sweden! From my top-of-the-mind spring forth Abba, Alfred Nobel, ummm… Bjorn Borg?

Reality check: did you know that Celcius, Ace of Base, Linnaeus (binomial naming of species?), Roxette, Rednex, Opeth, Tove Lo, Norse mythology (think Thor, Freya, Odin…) H&M, and smorgasbord are all Swedish too? And a gazillion other things, people and places, many of which will make you go: What the …! Or a plain and simple: Wow!

Ok. How about Nobel Prize winners? How many can you name in a minute? Mother Teresa, Kailash Satyarthi, Marie Curie, Rabindranath Tagore, Orhan Pamuk, Amartya Sen, … that list is 115 years old!

The Sweden India Nobel Memorial Quiz is an event that has captured the imagination of college students across the country like no other. The journey began quietly and tentatively nine years ago in Delhi, and has swelled to fully ten cities in the past two years, spanning the length and breadth of India, with the left-out cities clamouring to be included in the next edition.

The series was flagged off at Indore, followed by Pune and Mumbai. Ace Quizmaster Kunal Savarkar was a bit unsure about participation, as pre-registration had been lukewarm and the latter two cities have repeatedly displayed a penchant for the unpredictable, but he needn’t have been. All three cities evidently had more Sweden-Nobel enthusiasts than expected, and between our fantastic outreach team and the huge success of SINMQ 2014, the milling crowds put paid to our apprehensions.

If these three cities buoyed us with their attendance, the southern trio of Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai blew our minds with their numbers, enthusiasm and performance standards, with extremely keenly fought contests, superb audience involvement and institutional support.

The next three were Kolkata, Guwahati and Ahmedabad, which not only gave us reason to cheer in terms of numbers and quality but also drew participants from nearby (and not-so-nearby) towns and cities, all vying for a slice of Sweden.

2015 has in effect seen a phenomenal peak in participation, with record-breaking numbers in every single city. As this post goes to (word)press, Delhi is set to up the ante in style, with over 700 registered participants, and counting…

Meanwhile the various City Winners are packing their bags for Delhi and burning the candle at both ends (or should be!) picking up every bit of information on Sweden and the Nobel Prizes. We expect to see a fantastic fight to the finish. Last year it came right down to the wire, with the winning team doing a photo-finish, inching ahead of the second prize winners on the lastest question.

To set an even wider playing field, there are all kinds of allied events this year: twitter contests, photography and selfie contests, even a dress code! Pulsating excitement!

The next Twitter contest is this weekend – watch out for more details. All other contests will culminate on 16 October at the IP College for Women.

The SINMQ Juggernaut rolls on, and you are all invited…

Be there!

Shri Tech 2014

The Shri Ram School believes that within each child there lies a mind bubbling with questions and queries, notions and ideas, and it is their philosophy and objective to give them a forum where these can be addressed. The need of the hour is to help ignite the minds of our young citizens and to go beyond the realms of knowledge.
